NYFW Musings: Stressful, Stylish & Staying Warm!

Having never been to Fashion Week, or New York in that case, I had no idea what I was in for once arriving at JFK. First of all, I’m very much a California warm weather girl and given NY has had one of the worst winters in years, I more than severly overpacked in anticipation of a blizzard. To my surprise (and much to my relief), the weather was cold, but bearable. Having stocked up on plush leggings from American Apparel, I was easily capable of looking fashionable whilst remaining warm.

Having triumphed the chilly weather, it was time to conquer fashion. Upon receiving my media credentials and checking into the shows at Lincoln Center I surprised to learn that many of my seats were not seats at all, they were in turn for “standing room.” I learned that just like the film sets of LA, fashion shows are very much a “hurry up and wait” game- especially if you’re standing. Put it this way, you stand in a line for designer check-in, next you stand in another line after you’ve checked in, and then you’re (finally) ushered into the theatre to stand for the show. Sounds easy, but it makes for an exhausting process that becomes more draining, since you’re playing the game all day long. I had great experiences at all the shows I attended, but lesson learned, there’s a lot of buildup for those few magical minutes the runway is lit up, but trust me…all the standing and waiting is well worth it!

Moving on to the “fashion” in fashion week, if you’re reading this then you’ve obviously been keeping up with MyFDB’s exclusive NYFW coverage. So let me just dive right in with a few experiences that I’ll continue torave about down the line. First off, it’s no secret that I have a designer crush on Prabal Gurung! Not only is he super humble, but he’s one of the most talented and innovative fashion minds out there today. His show was literally emotionally moving with an amazing soundtrack and dresses that I’ll continue to dream of wearing. Actually meeting him at his afterparty was pretty thrilling! Second, seeing noteworthy industry players in real life was surreal. Watching Georgia May Jagger (pictured), Grace Coddington, Joe Zee, and Anna Dello Russo at the shows was a unique experience. To me, all of them are way more exciting and fashion forward than the actual celebrities who were also front row.

Along with Prabal, the two other shows that were my favorites were Jeremy Scott and the Marchesa presentation (if you read the write-ups, you’ll see why). These reviews, along the others written, were the result of long nights blogging after a full day of running around the city. At one point Vaneza and I literally had to run in Lincoln Center from the bus that brought us back from the Diesel show at Pier 94 to make it in time for foreplay with Herve Leger. I found myself married to my laptop during the trip; there were days I would wake up and reach for my computer before doing anything else. Luckily, the extraordinary teamwork between Vaneza & I made the workflow much less overwhelming. Believe it or not, I actually enjoyed the stress of getting unique content live on a daily basis. I learned a lot during the week and look forward to my next NYFW encounter…where I won’t be such a noob and will have photos of myself that include something other than a fur accessory.
