Jean-Paul Gaultier is a pioneer in the realm of fashion, with his innovative ideas and bold designs. Taipei, Taiwan’s Fine Arts Museum paid tribute to the French fashion designer with an exhibition featuring costumes from Gaultier’s collaborations with French choreographer Regine Chopinot from May 29 to August 15.

Exhibition of Ballet Costumes

The exhibition showcased a collection of dance costumes and accessories Gaultier designed for 12 modern ballets choreographed by Chopinot from 1983 to 1994, including “Le Defile,” “Delices,” “Soli-Bach,” and “K.O.K.”

The exhibition hall consisted of an array of over 140 mannequins displaying the French fashion designer’s work against a dramatic black backdrop. Fashion drawings, stage photographs, and a video of one of Chopinot’s ballets were also part of the exhibition.

Gaultier’s most original and provocative ideas were presented at the exhibition. His dance costumes are surreal and creative, with the use of a diverse range of fabrics and materials such as layers of tulle, pillows, and tattooed bodysuits. The outfits were accompanied by shoes and headpieces designed in an innovative, and at times bizarre, style that is typical of Gaultier.

About Jean-Paul Gaultier

Jean-Paul Gaultier is credited with setting the tone for fashion of the future with his avant-garde style. Gaultier is known for designing the iconic cone-bra for Madonna in the early 1990s, as well as costumes for her subsequent Confessions Tour in 2006, both of which attracted attention around the globe.

Although he was never formally trained in fashion design, Gaultier gained knowledge about fashion simply by observing the world around him. At the age of 18, Gaultier’s talent was spotted by Pierre Cardin, who took him under his wing as an assistant. In 1977, Gaultier launched his designs at his first spring-summer fashion show in Paris.

Gaultier has earned the status of being a visionary when it comes to fashion—many of today’s fashion trends were first conceptualized by him 20 to 30 years ago, including androgynous clothing and mixed ethnic style. What makes the French designer’s style so unique is his use of contrast, mixed mediums, and dislocated color to challenge established ideas about gender and clothing.

Dance Costumes

Gaultier’s talents have not been confined to the realm of fashion—he has undertaken collaborations in other areas of art and set new standards of creativity. Among his many endeavors, Gaultier has designed costumes for pop concerts and launched his own perfume brand.

The exhibition at the Fine Arts Museum is an example of Gaultier merging fashion with dance. Gaultier joined forces with Regine Chopinot, a contemporary French choreographer and dancer, to design costumes for 12 ballets. What made the collaboration unusual was that the choreography was developed specifically for the costumes, rather than the costumes being inspired by the choreography.

The 1985 ballet “Le Defile” was a blend between a fashion show and ballet, with around 20 dancers, actors, and models performing in an experimental show that set the stage for a new era of contemporary dance and fashion that overturned tradition. Gaultier designed corset dresses, tulle tutus, sculpted skirts, and used recycled objects, thus predicting the fashion trends that would dominate the future and cementing his status as an iconic fashion designer.
